Justin Maxwell gave Washington an, “Aw, isn’t that so special,” moment — the kind that’s far too rare for baseball in this town — in the Nationals’ home finale on Wednesday night. If nothing else, it should serve Maxwell’s inspiration next season.
The Olney native’s walk-off grand slam was the perfect ending of a terrific at-bat against Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, one of best breaking-ball pitchers in the majors. It was the second time ever that Maxwell was up with the bases loaded, and the second time he responded by knocking the ball out of park. A pretty far cry from an 0-for-16 stint — including 10 strikeouts — with the Nationals in May that had Maxwell testing baseball’s Triple-A revolving door.

The latest memories might even linger if Maxwell can parlay his slam into earning a job as the fourth or fifth outfielder when spring training opens in under five months. Maybe it’s just another sign that the Nationals have turned the corner.
