Redskins sign Hicks

The Redskins didn’t make the anticipated flashy signing, but they did address a need in the first weekend of free agency. Washington signed offensive lineman Artis Hicks to a three-year, $9-million contract.

Tackle Tony Pashos visited Friday, but now is visiting Cleveland. Linebacker Larry Foote will visit Washington Monday and Arizona on Wednesday. Running back Willie Parker is scheduled to visit Redskins Park Monday. Nose tackle Ma’aka Kemoeatu reportedly will visit Tuesday, but he’s coming off a torn Achilles and is 31.

Hicks can play every position but center and has started games at each of the other four spots. But he was last a fulltime starter in 2006 with Minnesota. He started 41 games between 2004-06, but only 13 since then while playing behind a solid line with the Vikings. It’s uncertain where Washington will play him right now. With his age (31) and experience, he would be a valuable swing lineman. However, they’re not paying him backup money.

He’s considered by Viking insiders as a hard worker and a great fit in the locker room. A quick scouting report is that has quick feet, but does not always play with great leverage. At 6-foot-4, 335 pounds he must stay low or he’ll struggle.

“He’s done well when he’s gotten the chance,” the insider said. “He won’t hurt you; he’s solid.”
