Daily Beast gives Iran a sympathetic ear

The Daily Beast published a short news report Monday detailing Iran’s efforts to have President Trump arrested and tried for the death of Iranian Quds Force leader and terrorist mastermind Qassem Soleimani.

The article, titled “Iran Issues Warrant for Donald Trump’s Arrest on ‘Murder and Terrorism’ Charges,” comes across as being oddly sympathetic to the No. 1 state sponsor of terrorism.

The story opens with these six words: “You can’t blame them for trying.”

What?

“Tehran prosecutor Ali Alqasimehr said Monday that Trump and dozens of others should be detained and charged for ordering and carrying out Soleimani’s assassination,” the report notes.

It adds, “The general was killed in a U.S. drone strike back in January. Alqasimehr stressed that Iran will continue to pursue Trump’s prosecution even if he loses November’s election, and added that Iran had asked the international policing agency Interpol for help in securing Trump’s arrest. Alqasimehr is reported to have said that Iran had requested a ‘red notice’ be put out for Trump — the highest level arrest request that Interpol can issue.”

It concludes, “Interpol has yet to comment on the bold request.”

That is all there is to the Daily Beast report because it is just an aggregation of a longer, more in-depth news article published by the Qatari state-controlled media operation known as Al Jazeera. The Daily Beast article even includes a link back to the original source that says, “Read it at Al Jazeera.”

Elsewhere, on Twitter, the Daily Beast’s social media team tweeted, “Iran has reportedly issued a warrant for Trump’s arrest on ‘murder and terrorism charges’ related to the killing of top general Qassem Soleimani.”

It adds, “You can’t blame them for trying.”

One should not need to say this, especially in the United States, but here goes: You do not, under any circumstances, “got to hand it to” Iran.

Just so we are all on the same page: A Qatari state-run media organization published a straightforward article this week reporting Iran’s efforts to have the U.S. president arrested for “assassinating” a terrorist. The original article contained no support one way or another for Iran’s demands.

The Daily Beast then repackaged the Al Jazeera article with an editorializing note saying you cannot blame Iran “for trying.”

Imagine being the other half in a media-related story involving Al Jazeera, and the Qatari state-controlled media operation being the one that comes across as staid and even-handed.
