The surrogacy fad has several dark elements, chief among them being the treatment of babies as commodities instead of people. This leads to a contradiction in Democratic Party ideology, where “your body, my choice” becomes the standard for abortion.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton intervened in a surrogacy case involving an Alaska woman who traveled to Texas to seek treatment for her unborn child. The woman was contracted as a surrogate for a California couple, who wanted “their” baby aborted over the baby’s heart defect. The couple tried to get the woman to come to California to deliver the baby, where they would almost certainly deny the baby medical care upon his birth. Paxton intervened in a lawsuit to ensure that “baby Gabriel” received life-saving medical care upon his birth in Texas.

In Texas, this is straightforward: A baby deserves every opportunity to live. In California, though, this somehow becomes trickier. The surrogate couple in question is allowed to pressure the woman to abort the baby against her will, using the legal threat of pulling payments or health insurance to compel the woman to comply. If the baby is born in California, the contracted couple becomes the legally recognized “parents,” who can then deny the baby life-saving medical care and leave him or her to die.
In other words, in California, abortion is a woman’s issue — “her body, her choice” — unless a gay couple wants to dump their “damaged” baby. Abortion is between a woman and her doctor, and the eugenicist couple who contracted the woman to birth the baby for them.

On the one hand, this is shockingly dystopian, buying and selling babies and treating women as breeding stock. On the other hand, this is the natural result of the dehumanization of unborn (and even born) babies by the abortion-rights movement. Surrogacy treats babies as products, with “defective” ones being discarded like garbage, and the pregnant women in the equation are treated as nothing more than delivery drivers.
The result is that Democrats in states such as California don’t care if surrogacy violates every half-baked talking point they use to defend abortion as a “woman’s choice.” The only consistency is the dehumanization of the babies, who are treated as babies only if they are wanted and are treated as disposable inconveniences if they are not.
