RYE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say two workers have been taken to the hospital after they were rescued from a trench collapse in Rye, New York.

Rye Mayor Joseph Sack says the workers were “alert and conscious” after their ordeal on Thursday.

According to Sack, the homeowner called 911 around 11:15 a.m.

The walls of the trench had collapsed during excavation next to the foundation.

City workers and Con Edison used vacuum trucks to clear the debris so the men could be freed.

They were pulled from the hole around 12:30 and 12:45 p.m.
