The U.S. Tennis Association has named the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation as the 2010 National Community Tennis Association of the Year.
The D.C. group was honored at an event over the weekend in Crystal City.
When it first opened in 1955 the foundation was designed to help disadvantaged youth through tennis. It has since expanded its reach by providing academic support to at-risk children and teaching them to “apply the lessons learned on the tennis court in the classroom and beyond,” a news release said.
In each of the past 13 years, 100 percent of the students graduating from the foundation’s program were admitted to college.
