THE BIG NUMBER: McDonald’s Corp. said a key sales figure rose 3.7 percent in August, as it emphasized the value of its menu offerings amid a challenging global economy.

THE DETAILS: The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company says the increase in its global sales figure was helped by the timing of Ramadan, as well as its sponsorship of the London Olympics.

THE BACKGROUND: The increase follows a disappointing performance in July, when the figure came in flat. That was the worst showing since April 2003.
