Knucklehead of the week: Jayson Williams

Taking a lesson out of the Tiger Woods playbook, Jayson Williams added to his own already complicated set of legal troubles by crashing into a tree early Tuesday morning, except that the Williams tree was in lower Manhattan, not his own driveway, according to police.

It appears Williams showed the same kind of composure in his latest episode that witnesses had recalled following the shooting death of a hired driver at his house in February 2002. In that manslaughter case, the defense maintained Williams had panicked after, according to witnesses, he had been showing off a shotgun while drinking and accidentally shot the driver while snapping it shut.

Williams is awaiting retrial on charges stemming from that case.

On Tuesday morning, the police said Williams moved to the passenger seat after crashing and originally told them someone else had been driving. Of course, witnesses again saw him do it.

Williams was arraigned on drunk driving charges Thursday from the hospital, where he’s recovering from a minor neck fracture and cuts to his face.
