Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells continued to play out his new role as the council’s ethics hawk on Tuesday, announcing on NewsChannel 8’s “NewsTalk” that he wants to repeal a controversial provision to bring Internet gambling to the District.
Last week Wells launched himself as an outspoken ethics thorn in the side of council Chairman Kwame Brown after Brown stripped Wells of the powerful transportation committee.
On Tuesday, Wells said he’ll try to repeal the online gambling provision when the council returns this fall because “it didn’t go through a public process.” The measure authorizing D.C. Lottery to create the gambling program was slipped into a budget bill in December, dodging a public hearing.
The Washington Times reported on Tuesday that D.C. Lottery is delaying plans to implement Internet gambling.
