Chinese telecom firm presses Trump administration to reverse sales ban

A Chinese telecommunications firm formally asked the Trump administration to reverse a ban imposed last month that would prevent any U.S. business from selling products to the company for seven years.

ZTE Corp on Sunday disclosed it submitted the request to the U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, but offered no details about what was included in the correspondence. The company said it has provided the agency with additional materials related to the sales ban.

The Commerce Department imposed the ban on sales of U.S. components and software to ZTE in April after discovering that the firm breached U.S. sanctions on Iran. Chinese government officials reportedly raised concerns about the ban during a visit to the country by a U.S. trade delegation last week.

A Commerce Department spokesman did not immediately respond to request for comment.
