The Nation magazine endorsed Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., to be the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
The super liberal publication, based in New York, said the Democratic Party is facing a “serious a crisis of confidence and direction” and it’s time to align it “more closely with movements for social and economic justice.”
“That’s why The Nation enthusiastically endorses Ellison in the contest to lead a DNC that must repurpose itself in order to derail [President] Trump, while at the same time speaking to young voters who won’t settle for anything less than an aggressively progressive opposition party,” the magazine said.
Ellison was also endorsed by former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. The two endorsements signal Ellison’s front-runner status among the left-wing of the Democratic Party.
“The job of DNC chair is to build a party that can win elections on every ballot line and in every state,” the Nation said in its endorsement. “But in an age when party loyalties are weakening, and when movements matter more to tens of millions of Americans than partisan labels, Ellison is ready to build an activist party.”
The DNC’s election is held later this month.
