Examiner’s Harnik wins photo awards

Washington Examiner photojournalist Andrew Harnik has won awards from the White House News Photographers Association’s annual photo contest for the fourth year in a row.

This has been Harnik’s best year yet, receiving a third-place award in the Portrait category as well as an award of excellence and another third-place award in the Domestic News category.

The contest is extremely competitive and features some of the District’s best photographers. Freelance photographers and professional news photographers from all major newspapers, magazines and wire services compete.

“We are happy for Andrew, and proud of the work he does for The Examiner,” said Managing Editor Michael Hedges. “As these awards show, Andrew is a versatile professional who is exceptional at covering breaking news and shooting penetrating portraits.”

Each category has an estimated 60 to 300 entries, according to Harnik. Each photographer is allowed 25 entries in the contest, plus a portfolio.

The competition was judged last weekend by professionals — including one photographer from National Geographic. The competition lasted two days, and was held at the National Geographic Headquarters in downtown Washington.

Harnik has been working for The Examiner for seven years, but has been a photographer since he was a child.

This is the fourth consecutive year Harnik has won awards at this competition. In 2010, he placed third and got an award of excellence in Domestic News. He also received an award of excellence in Domestic News in 2009 and Pictorial in 2008.
