The historic Mayflower Hotel isn’t afraid to admit the obvious: That throughout its 80-year history, “perhaps a hotel guest or two has taken a memento — a little souvenir.”

Thus did hotel historian Keith McClinsey — in researching his new book, “Images of America: Washington, D.C.’s Mayflower Hotel” — determine that many a Mayflower-branded item has grown legs. In fact, of the hotel antiques on display in the lobby, McClinsey found many of them on eBay.

Now, the hotel is offering an amnesty program. It has announced that through the new year, the front desk “will be accepting not only purloined Mayflower memorabilia, but also the stories that go with them.”
