DETROIT (AP) — Tucked back on a one-way street without even its name on signage (look for a suspended wooden barrel instead), Detroit City Distillery in historic Eastern Market would be an easy place to miss. But for those who appreciate boutique spirits and hand-crafted cocktails, it’s an atmospheric, must-visit destination.

Founded by a group of friends from Bath, Michigan, Detroit City opened recently in what was once a slaughterhouse and meat-packing facility, “which a lot of things in Eastern Market were,” tasting room manager and head bartender Chuck Gellasch tells the Detroit Free Press ( http://on.freep.com/1Dxx7z3 ). When they began reclaiming the space, it was just a long, spare, box-shaped room with floor-to-ceiling brick walls, a concrete floor and exposed steel beams and pillars.
