Donnie Wahlberg joins Marco Rubio’s band

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio did not get Mitt Romney’s endorsement Sunday, but he is hanging tough by snagging support from actor and former musician Donnie Wahlberg.

“Even though we do not see eye to eye on every issue, I know that Marco is a man of principle who can be trusted to keep us safe and give each and every one of us a shot at the American Dream,” Wahlberg, an actor and founding member of the New Kids on the Block, said in a statement released by Rubio’s campaign.

“Marco is a humble man who has not forgotten his roots, and he will fight to make sure that where you come from does not determine how far you can go,” Walhberg, a native of Boston’s working class Dorchester neighborhood. “We need a leader like Marco to inspire a new Republican party and unite our nation, and I am proud to support him for President.”

Wahlberg didn’t always seem to be a Rubio fan. In August, Wahlberg suggested another candidate, former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, had the right stuff.

“She is a strong human being and a strong candidate for President in 2016!,” he tweeted to his more than 700,000 followers.

Fiorina ended her campaign on Feb. 10.

Wahlberg will john Rubio Sunday night at a rally in north Las Vegas, where the Republican caucus will be held Tuesday.
