Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, is saying all the things he wishes he’d said to former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., in the Orlando Republican debate last week.
In a continuing effort to highlight Romney’s “stimu-flop,” Perry’s campaign pulled out these quotations from a National Review column written by Romney in 2008 that called for “A Republican Stimulus Plan”:
- “The Fed should continue to expand the money supply.”
- “This is surely the time for economic stimulus.”
- “A stimulus plan is needed without further delay.”
Romney also said that “the government can’t just make itself bigger and more oppressive in the guise of stimulating the economy.” But he also seemed comfortable with new spending, saying that “infrastructure projects should be a high priority,” although he seemed open to a broader array of projects, on the condition that “all new spending projects should be selected by the responsible federal agency according to published criteria.”
That said, Romney also warned that “new spending and deficits” could produce “another economic crisis,” so he called for “Congress and the president commit to reform entitlement spending as soon as the economy recovers. ” Still, he will have to deal with his past support for the stimulus in his next debate – assuming that Perry remembers to attack him on it.
