President Trump and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., had a productive meeting Sunday while playing golf at one of Trump’s courses in Virginia, the senator’s spokesman said in a statement.
“Sen. Rand Paul considers President Trump a personal friend,” Sergio Gor, a spokesman for Paul, told reporters traveling with the president. “They had a great time playing today and discussed multiple initiatives that they can work on together going forward.”
Trump and Paul have had an adversarial relationship occasionally since the president beat out the libertarian during the 2016 Republican primary.
Paul, an eye doctor, was also a crucial “no” vote during the Obamacare repeal and replace debate that took place over the summer, but supported Trump’s executive order Thursday that ended health insurance company subsidies.
The meeting at Trump’s golf club Sunday comes as the president tries to woo Paul’s support for his tax reform plan in an effort to achieve one of his campaign promises before year’s end.
The pair last hit the links on April 2.
Trump also played a round on Saturday with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., another key ally the White House needs on Capitol Hill to advance the administration’s legislative agenda.
