House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., praised former FBI Director James Comey after his appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday for his “resolute testimony” on President Trump and his effort to stop an investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn.
“I think we saw confirmation in Director Comey’s resolute testimony detailing the frightening reality of President Trump’s pattern of contempt for justice,” Pelosi said.
“His pattern of concerted and inexcusable efforts to shut down the FBI’s investigation of his cronies’ ties to Russia and all of that, I think, disgraces the office of the president,” Pelosi said. “The president may not realize that, but maybe I had more respect for the office of the president than he does.”
“Instead of protecting our democracy from [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, President Trump worked relentlessly to obstruct the investigation of Michael Flynn and his campaign’s possible collusion with Russia,” she continued. “Nothing less than the integrity and security of our democracy is at stake.”
Pelosi said she has faith in former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who is the special counsel investigating Russia now, but repeated her call for an independent commission.
“I salute Director Comey for his courage,” she added. “I thank him for sharing the facts in a very straightforward way, and look forward to where we go from here.”
