Trump postpones Las Vegas fundraiser

President Trump has postponed a Las Vegas fundraiser that was to collect money from wealthy donors for his 2020 re-election bid, the Republican National Committee said Wednesday.

The event was canceled after the shooting in Las Vegas earlier this month that left 59 dead. A lone gunman opened fire from a casino tower, targeting attendees of an outdoor country music concert with automatic weapons fire. It was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

No new date for the fundraiser has been established.

According to a copy of the invitation, the fundraiser was to occur on Oct. 21 and funnel cash into a joint fundraising committee established by the Republican National Committee and the president’s campaign. Individuals were invited to purchase tickets for $35,000. Couples who wanted to join the “host committee” were asked for $100,000.

Trump’s fundraising for 2020, which is ongoing, comes amidst a senior member of his White House, Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, urging party donors to cut off Republicans in Congress ahead of the 2018 midterms until they pass tax reform — and to permanently pull the plug on the House and Senate majorities if the tax overhaul fails.

The Trump-Pence dinner event in Las Vegas was to be hosted RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel; RNC Finance Chairman Steve Wynn, a Las Vegas casino mogul, and his wife Andrea; and RNC Deputy Finance Chairman Elliott Broidy.

This story was updated to reflect the postponement of the fundraiser.
