Dylann Roof has admitted to shooting and killing nine people he sat with at a Charleston, S.C., church Wednesday night, two law enforcement officials said.
Roof, 21, opened fire on the worshippers at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church to start a race war, he allegedly told investigators.
According to Roof’s roommate, he was “big into segregation” and “wanted to make something spark up the race war again.” According to CNN, officials said Roof bought a .45 caliber handgun at a Charleston gun store with birthday money from his family, and used that weapon Wednesday night.
Roof, who was apprehended in North Carolina Thursday, was returned to Charleston that same night. His bond hearing is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. where he will be charged with nine counts of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
