Photo exhibit examines the cost of war

The traveling photography exhibit “Moving Walls 10,” sponsored by the Open Society Institute, displays the work of New York photographer Nina Berman at UMBC from Dec. 4 to Jan. 21.

The exhibit, named “Purple Hearts,” features photographs of American soldiers injured in Iraq. Excerpts from interviews with the wounded soldiers accompany the photos, bringing the photographs to a more personal level. Many of the soldiers support the war, but some question the decisions made by the government.

“The image of a wounded American soldier is one piece of evidence that the American public can examine to begin separating propaganda ? that war is quick and bloodless ? from truth,” Berman said in a statement. “The photographs are only a partial accounting of the true cost.”

“Moving Walls” is an ongoing series of photography exhibitions addressing social justice issues.

The exhibit will be displayed in the Commons Mezzanine Gallery at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, located at 1000 Hilltop Circle in Catonsville. The opening reception takes place 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4. A discussion by Artists for Social Change, a UMBC student group, will focus on the issues surrounding the photographs.
