Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., believes CNN’s Jim Acosta was set up by the Trump administration this week in a conspiracy to have his White House credentials suspended.
Sure. Seems plausible.

On Wednesday, President Trump and Acosta yelled at each other during a press conference. After the president answered Acosta’s first set of questions, he tried to move on. But Acosta just kept on right along, monologuing about hurtful anti-immigrant rhetoric. A White House intern tried at one point to take the microphone away from Acosta, but he resisted her and kept on talking. He surrendered the microphone shortly thereafter, as Trump berated him in front of everyone.
The White House announced Wednesday evening that it had suspended Acosta’s credentials, arguing that in resisting the intern’s attempts to take back the microphone, he had committed battery against a White House employee.
On Thursday, Connolly told the celebrity gossip news site TMZ that he smelled a conspiracy.
“Do you think he’s going to have a better relationship with all these reporters?” the TMZ reporter asked.
The congressman responded, “I would not argue that he’s going to have a better relationship with the reporters, given the fact he pulled Jim Acosta’s White House press credentials yesterday in kind of a staged setup.”
He added, “It was kind of a disgusting scene. So I think it raises very worrying questions about any respect at all he has for the free press and the role of the free press in a democratic society.”
“When you say staged, do you think he came in to distract?” TMZ asked in a follow-up. Connelly said, “I believe they had an intern deliberately set up Jim Acosta. Yeah, I think that was pretty clear.”
The takeaway I’m getting here is that the hardline, Scott Adams-style MAGA-heads aren’t the only ones who think Trump is constantly playing a game of 4D chess. Connolly is right there with them. And nuts. It’s been a rough couple of years for Occam’s Razor, and it’s only going to get worse.
