A Baltimore man was sentenced Tuesday to 26 years for fatally stabbing a woman at her home in Northeast Washington.
John William Smith Jr., 47, pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court in January to second-degree murder while armed in the death of 47-year-old Elaine Coleman.

Police said Smith stabbed Coleman 41 times, possibly with scissors, at her home in the 552 23rd Place NE in December. Before Coleman’s death, Smith had told witnesses that he was angry because she was getting back with her ex-boyfriend.
In 2005, Smith was charged with first-degree murder for a stabbing death of a victim who was killed with a pair of scissors, police said. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case in 2006, and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
