General Electric, led by President Obama’s jobs czar Jeffrey Immelt, faces a protest from the firmly-Democratic United Auto Workers union — but “political pressure” on the union might rescue the company.

UAW president Bob King has called for a protest of the upcoming GE shareholder’s meeting in the name of “social justice,” as he proposed “nonviolent direct action” against the company. “It will take us being willing to face arrest,” the Detroit News quotes him as saying.
With the meeting now two days away, though, “the union now seems to be dialing down its plans under pressure from political leaders who worry the demonstration could become a major embarrassment to a city and state struggling to attract business and investment.”
Immelt hasn’t let down his guard. After facing protestors today, he joked that the encounter provided “good practice” for the possible UAW protest later this week.
