Rise and shine and renovate a Southeast school

To the lazy among us, Saturday is April 16. But to the city’s engaged citizens, Saturday is Global Youth Service Day.

Serve DC, the mayor’s office of volunteerism, will join with City Year Washington volunteers and 100 D.C. Public Schools students to renovate a Ward 8 school.

Johnson Middle School is set to receive a 9 a.m. face-lift from the volunteers, including grounds and classroom cleanup, mural painting, planting of educational gardens and the creation of a school museum honoring the Congress Heights community.

The 23rd annual Global Youth Service Day is an international campaign to get youth involved in service for their communities.
