W. Va.’s Democratic governor mum about backing Obama

West Virginia sent some political smoke signals yesterday when Democratic Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin became the second politician in his state to straight-arm President Obama. His comments followed similar remarks by Sen. Joe Manchin, who last month said he was having second thoughts about supporting the president this time around.

Asked whether he’ll support Mr. Obama or Mitt Romney for the White House in 2012, Mr. Tomblin said that neither had earned his vote at this point and that he does “not believe that either candidate has a real understanding of what is important to West Virginia.” Of the president he said, “Mr. Obama has apparently made it his mission to drive the backbone of West Virginia’s economy, coal and the energy industry out of business. That will not only hurt thousands of West Virginia families, it will destroy the economic fabric of our state.”
