D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray has nominated former city auditor Deborah Nichols to chair the Board of Elections and Ethics. Her nomination to the board is pending council approval.

Gray had to withdraw his last pick to chair the board because of residency issues. Robert Mallett moved from D.C. to New York in the early 2000s and had only moved back to the District about a year ago. Board members are required to live in D.C. for at least three years at the time of their nomination.

Nichols, a Ward 6 resident, has worked in the Office of the Auditor since 1983, according to the mayor’s office. She previously worked as a legislative aide on the D.C. Council. She holds degrees from Howard University and the North Carolina Central University School of Law.
