President Trump and his defenders act like they’ve got a hot one on their hands with the revelation that the “whistleblower” in the Ukraine mess tipped off Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and his staff before anyone else. They apparently think this is the proof the public needed to know that this is a political hit job.
But here’s the truth: It was always obvious that this was political. We don’t need a detailed timeline of the career government worker’s day to know that he was motivated by politics.
The New York Times reported Wednesday that Schiff, a Democrat from California, had been notified of the government worker’s complaint “days” before it had been officially filed. At a press conference shortly after the Times’ story went online, Trump triumphantly waved a printed out version and declared that it proved the complaint and the House move to impeach him was all “a scam.”
Yes, it’s a scam. But learning whether the “whistleblower” first walked to the Capitol to tip off Schiff, and whether he stopped on the way buy a pussy hat, is beside the point.
The only thing that matters is that this James Comey protégé just instigated an impeachment in a naked attempt to sway the 2020 election.
Look at the full complaint. The summary at the top asserts that Trump “is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election.” Wow, that sounds pretty severe! But that’s apparently as far as Democrats got. The rest reads like a game of Clue.
Take this part lifted directly from the complaint, which the author himself admits is largely based on second and third-hand information:
Clear as Watergate, right?
That’s just a small piece of the background for what Democrats believe will be a slam-dunk attempt at impeachment. Those are just a few of the details behind the case that Democrats believe will move public opinion squarely in Democrats’ favor.
The complaint started with a phone conversation Trump had with the head of Ukraine to ask about potential corruption issues related to the 2016 election and Joe Biden. Democrats had, until now, been very keen on learning more details about foreign interference in the 2016 election. As for Biden, isn’t it strange that Democrats aren’t so much defending him as they are attacking anyone who has questions related to him and his son’s dealings with Ukraine?
The timeline of when this government worker delivered his complaint to Schiff doesn’t matter. It’s a distraction from the fact that the complaint, regardless of where it was delivered and when, is in itself an attempt by Democrats to sway the next election.
