» The Redskins did not blitz on San Diego’s first possession and I can’t imagine they’ll do it much. Philip Rivers is one of the NFL’s best vs. the blitz. Plus, Washington is applying enough pressure with the front four.
» But one reason San Diego has thrown two screen passes already is to keep the Redskins’ line guessing and to slow their rush. Norv Turner is doing a good job of helping a line that had to deal with some injuries this season. At one point, they had two backups and a rookie starting along the line. Now it’s one backup (right guard) and a rookie (right tackle).
» Is there really anything much to say about a dropped interception. Of course Fred Smoot should have had it.
» H.B. Blades has had a couple nice plays already, starting with the tackle on the opening kickoff. And when LaDainian Tomlinson was stopped for no gain, it was his penetration that forced LT to run wider than desired, right into corner Carlos Rogers.
» Nate Kaeding made that 47-yard kick look easy. Very smooth kicker.
» Jason Campbell is off today; threw low and behind Fred Davis (though he still probably could have caught the ball) and then threw high and a bit wide to Antwaan Randle El (when he had decent protection). With the way the running game has been going the past few weeks, if Campbell’s rhythm is off, it’ll be a long day.
» Philip Rivers has missed some passes he normally hits, like to Antonio Gates after he had beaten, badly, Brian Orakpo. But Rivers is resourceful; on the fourth and 1, he appeared to lose the handle of the ball so he threw it two-handed just to get it out on time.
» He did not look inaccurate on the pass to Gates for a touchdown. Yes, Carlos Rogers was slowed by Darren Sproles’ presence in the flat, but should Kareem Moore have gotten there a little earlier? Why not cheat more toward Gates’ side? Who else do you think Rivers will go to in the red zone in a crucial situation?
» Campbell is inconsistent today with his throws.
» Liked the Chargers rush where they took the end, Shaun Phillips, and had him start at left end and come through the Redskins left tackle to pressure Campbell. It worked. Derrick Dockery was not expecting it at all.
» Now that Billy Volek is at quarterback, the Redskins blitzed on a third and 6. The only reason the Chargers converted is because London Fletcher missed a tackle after the catch.
