Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Donald Trump needs to change now if he wants to win in November.
McConnell told the Kickass Politics podcast it’s high time for the GOP’s presumptive nominee to pivot and begin acting presidential.
“It’s no secret that he’s struggling,” McConnell said in the interview uploaded on Friday. “He’s earned the nomination, but in order to be elected president, he needs to pivot and start acting presidential.”
The Senate’s top-ranking Republican continued to argue that there is “nothing wrong with using a script,” in hopes of getting Trump to change his style.
“I think just kind of going from rally to rally and winging it may have worked in the primary, but it’s not going work in the general,” McConnell said. “I’ve endorsed him because he’s earned the nomination, but he needs to start acting like a serious candidate for president if he wants to win the election.”
McConnell said he still wants Trump to win in November, but believes the businessman must make changes as the presumptive GOP nominee because he has had “a number of very significant gaffes” that have tanked his poll numbers. Whether Trump heeds any Republicans’ advice remains to be seen.
