The injuries might be starting to take their toll on the Langley girls soccer team, but there’s little evidence to show in the standings.
They could be without as many as three starters for their final two regular season games, but the Saxons (8-1-2, 5-0 Liberty District), who were supposed to be rebuilding this season after the graduation of two All-Examiner picks, moved to the top of the Examiner’s rankings this week after a 4-0 pounding of W.T. Woodson on Friday in a rematch of last year’s district final.
“In the past we’ve relied a lot upon — and we had a good year last year — we relied very heavily upon Stephanie Dansereau and Kimmy Germain and [junior forward] Meghan [Lencyzk] contributing,” said Saxons coach Melissa Bibbee, who guided Langley to the Northern Region semifinals last season. “This year it’s multiple people.”
Lencyzk and senior Caity Comstock are tied for the team lead with have eight goals, but sophomore Kelly Germain also has six and reserve forward Faith Adams has four.
Bibbee moved senior Caitlin Gorham from stopper to sweeper against the Cavaliers after junior Daria Hafner suffered a quad injury in the previous match. Hafner, junior Claire Hakim and freshman Brittany Fruin are all doubtful for today’s showdown with Stone Bridge.
“It’s the story of our season so far,” said Bibbee. “They have a lot of heart. Sometimes we’re not playing overly well, but they get it done.”
