President Obama’s former top political adviser, David Axelrod, compared Martin O’Malley to Gary Hart in comments this morning on national television:
“David Axelrod, what does Martin O’Malley need to do to break through?”
“Well, he has to hang around and be persistent and hope to get some breaks,” said Axelrod. “You know, Martin O’Malley began his career driving Gary Hart, a young senator from Colorado in 1984, who was widely discounted as a potential challenger to Walter Mondale who was the presumptive nominee. And Hart ended up taking Mondale right to the edge of defeat before Mondale overcame that. And that was his formative experience, O’Malley’s formative experience. He’s hoping for that same kind of effect.”
