Kavanaugh confirmation enters new territory as first meeting with Democrat looms

Published July 29, 2018 4:00am ET

Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation process will take a new turn Monday as he readies for a sit-down with Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and begins to meet with Senate Democrats who are largely opposed to his nomination to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.

In the opening weeks following his nomination, the judge has met with more than two dozen senators — all Republicans. But that will change Monday, when Kavanaugh sits down with Manchin, who will be the first Democrat to meet with President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.
