Alexandria, Fairfax police investigate racial vandalism
Alexandria and Fairfax police are investigating vandalism that left about 40 Alexandria area cars covered in slurs and swastikas. Ten cars parked on the 1800 block of North Chambliss Street in Alexandria had “racial slurs, sexual slurs, swastikas — all kinds of nastiness” drawn on them with shoe polish early Sunday morning, said Lt. Jamie Bartlett, an Alexandria police spokesman. Another 30 cars across the county line in Fairfax were similarly vandalized, he said. – Maria Hegstad
Man injured, cats killed in fire
A Monday afternoon house fire hospitalized a man and killed five of the estimated 50 to 60 pets living in the Falls Church home, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
The man, who has not been identified, was flown to a burn center in the District as a precautionafter he inhaled smoke from the 2:45 p.m. fire on Jefferson Avenue, said Lt. Willie Bailey, a spokesman for the department.
Firefighters brought the blaze, which was mostly contained to a single room, under control in about 10 minutes, he said. No damage estimate was available. – William C. Flook
Body found near Sligo Creek Parkway
Montgomery County and Maryland-National Capital Park Police are searching for information regarding the body of a dead 41-year-old Hispanic man discovered Sunday afternoon in Silver Spring.
A passerby found the corpse around 4:30 p.m. along Sligo Creek Parkway in a wooded area near University Boulevard. This case is being investigated as a suspicious death, but the cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office. Police officials declined to say whether they suspected it was a homicide.
The victim’s identity is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin. – Kathleen Miller
