Virginia Sen. Mark Warner said it’s time for Democrats like him — those who have voted against gun control measures in the past — to take a look at themselves and see if their positions really reflect their constituents.
Warner said on CBS’ “Face The Nation” on Sunday that it might be time to change positions on things like an assault weapons ban or a ban on high-capacity magazines.
“It’s time to change our positions and re-examine. I’d always been in favor of universal background checks, particularly after Sandy Hook, but it’s time for us to have a legitimate debate about restrictions on assault weapons,” he said.
“You get into definitions, but the basic notion of these weaponized military weapons need to be off our streets. Even the Trump administration took some small step on bump stocks. I think it’s time and I hope these kids continue to press.”
Warner was speaking in the wake of the March For Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C., that drew hundreds of thousands of people to the nation’s capital. Other marches around the country drew hundreds of thousands more people.
Warner in the past has voted against a ban on assault weapons and a ban on high-capacity magazines.
