Virginia Sen. Richard Saslaw has made up his mind: Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine should run for the U.S. Senate in place of Sen. Jim Webb, who announced he won’t seek re-election in 2012 on Tuesday.
After Webb made his announcement, Kaine quickly rose to the top of a list of potential Democratic candidates for the election. Kaine hasn’t indicated whether or not he’s interested in entering the race, but Saslaw said the former Virginia governor’s campaign would likely be a success.
“The man’s never lost a race, and he’s won two statewide races,” Saslaw said. “He could win this thing, and we’ve got the poll to prove it.”
