Former National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft endorsed Hillary Clinton for president on Wednesday, stating that she is the candidate with most the “wisdom and experience to lead our country at this critical time.”
Scowcroft served most recently under President George H.W. Bush and is a friend of the family.
“Secretary Clinton shares my belief that America must remain the world’s indispensible leader. She understands that our leadership and engagement beyond our borders makes the world, and therefore the United States, more secure and prosperous,” Scowcroft wrote in his endorsement.
“She appreciates that it is essential to maintain our strong military advantage, but force must be used as a last resort.”
Scowscroft also served as a national security adviser to President Richard Nixon and chairman of President George H.W Bush’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. The longtime Republican then assisted President Obama in choosing his national security team when he assumed office in 2008.
Other Republicans who have endorsed Clinton include former South Dakota Sen. Larry Pressler and speechwriter Mark Salter.
Donald Trump clashed with the Bush family during the Republican primaries, being especially critical of rival Jeb Bush. His position in the polls against Hillary Clinton has deteriorated in recent weeks, a trend that has continued since his response to the Orlando, Fla., attacks.
