Elon Musk to revamp verification check mark with quadrupling charge

As the new Twitter CEO, Elon Musk is looking to charge verified users an increased fee to use Twitter Blue and have the perks of a blue check mark next to their social media account handle.

Musk tweeted Sunday that the entire program is “being revamped.”

“The whole verification process is being revamped right now,” Musk said in reply to someone asking for help regarding becoming verified on the social media platform.

Twitter is looking to charge verified users $19.99 per month, an increase of the currently optional $4.99 fee, according to the Verge. Verified users would have 90 days to opt in to the new program or lose their blue check mark, along with its accompanying platform features, which include editing tweets and ad-free articles.

Musk has reportedly tasked Twitter staff to implement the update by Nov. 7, and if the deadline is not met, staff could lose their roles.

Musk took over the social media platform Thursday. Leading up to his purchase, Musk was clear he wanted to revamp how accounts were verified and eliminate bots and trolls.

In May, as Musk was working out his deal to purchase Twitter, he touted charging government and commercial users a “slight” fee to use the platform. He also said other changes would come, including open algorithms and the elimination of censorship.
