Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus joined Donald Trump on Sunday in criticizing the current presidential debate schedule, which was determined by a nonpartisan commission nearly a year ago.
“I don’t understand why we would have Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump debating each other — which is of interest to the entire country … Why would we present the next president of the U.S. on a Sunday night or a Monday night?” Priebus told CBS’ John Dickerson.
“Why wouldn’t we want to maximize the viewership so that people can watch?” he repeated
As it stands now, the current presidential debate schedule includes three debates between late September and mid-October, one of which is scheduled for a Sunday. The other two debates will take place on Monday, Sept. 26 and Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Priebus said “it’s up to the nominees of both parties” to make decisions surrounding the general election debates, noting that the “RNC is going to support [Trump] and his decision on this.”
“There’s a lot of flaws with this commission. They’re working hard and it’s not easy, I know that … But there’s no reason why there won’t be a give and take,” Priebus said. “Having a debate on a Sunday night or Monday night isn’t ideal, and I think that should be revisited.”
