Clinton praises Trump’s ‘New York values’ response

Hillary Clinton praised Donald Trump for his defense of New York City during the Republican presidential debate last night.

“Just this once, Trump’s right: New Yorkers value hard work, diversity, tolerance, resilience and building better lives for our families,” Clinton, a former New York senator, tweeted on Friday morning, following the debate.

On Thursday night, Trump got into a heated exchange with Ted Cruz when the Texas senator denounced “New York values,” as “socially liberal” values and focused “around money and the media.”

While Cruz initially earned some applause for his condemnation of big city values, Trump immediately seized the opportunity to extol the virtues of New Yorkers, especially in reference to the attacks on the city on Sept. 11, 2001.

“New York is a great place. It’s got great people. It’s got loving people, wonderful people,” Trump said. “When the World Trade Center came down, I saw something that no place on Earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than New York … we rebuilt downtown Manhattan, and everybody in the world watched, and everybody in the world loved New York and loved New Yorkers, and I have to tell you, that was a very insulting statement that Ted made.”

With his statement, Trump managed to bring the crowd to a roaring applause. Clinton, although she rarely agrees with Trump, has also repeatedly invoked the strength of New Yorkers on 9/11 while on the campaign trail.
