In a letter to President Xi Jinping of China, President Trump said he looked forward to developing a “constructive relationship” with the country.
In a statement, the White House said the president looks forward to a relationship that benefits both the United States and China.
Trump’s letter, which was sent in response to a letter from the Chinese president congratulating Trump on his inauguration, also wished the Chinese people a happy new year.
Xi has not yet received a phone call. Trump has spoken on the phone to over a dozen world leaders, including those of Taiwan and Japan.
