Perry: Trump is ‘committed’ to immigration reform

Donald Trump is fully committed to keeping Americans safe and securing the Southern border, despite his recent wavering on some of his own immigration proposals, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Tuesday.

Perry fought with Trump over immigration early on in the GOP primary, but later endorsed the Republican presidential nominee. He told Fox News Tuesday morning that Trump’s policy proposals are “focused on securing this country,” and ensuring the border is not being penetrated by “people who would harm us.”

“Donald Trump’s not softening his position on immigration,” Perry contended. “I think there’s a lot of talking heads around here who say we’ll grab that word here and that word there, [but] Donald Trump is going to secure that border in all different ways.”

“[Trump] is committed not only to immigration reform that lets the people that we want in this country, but those that have come in and overstayed their visas, those who have come in with criminal elements,” he added. “Those individuals are going to be rounded up and dealt with appropriately.”

Perry’s comments come 24 hours before Trump plans to deliver a major speech on immigration to clarify whether he still supports a “deportation force” and opposes a pathway to legal status, among other questions about his immigration proposals.

The billionaire told Fox News’ Sean Hannity last week that he hopes to tackle immigration reform in “a humane way.”
