CRIST WINS FLORIDA DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY FOR GOVERNOR
Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist won the Democratic primary to challenge Republican Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday, marking another step in an unlikely political comeback four years after leaving the GOP. Crist defeated Nan Rich, a former Senate Democratic leader who has been campaigning for governor longer than Crist has been a Democrat. He is the first person in Florida to win the nomination for governor as a Republican and a Democrat.
GARCIA: BLOCK VENEZUELA’S SALE OF CITGO
Florida Democratic Rep. Joe Garcia is calling on the Obama administration to block Venezuela’s sale of U.S.-based Citgo Petroleum Corp. A Venezuelan official said earlier this month the country would sell its oil refining and distribution network in the U.S. for the right price. Analysts say the proposal reflects the social government’s urgent cash shortage.
COUNTY OKS DEAL FOR ORLANDO CITY SC TRAINING HOME
Officials in Seminole County have approved an agreement that will give Orlando’s incoming Major League Soccer franchise use of the county’s existing training facility. The unanimous vote by the Seminole County Board of Commissioners Tuesday allows Orlando City Soccer Club the exclusive use of two of the six fields at Lake Sylvan Park.
POLICE: DENIED MARRIAGE REQUEST SPURS ATTACK
Authorities say an elderly man was beaten after he refused another man permission to marry his girlfriend. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies arrested 40-year-old James Kane Monday on a charge of felony domestic battery on a person over 65. Kane told deputies he became angry after the 72-year-old victim refused his marriage request.
WHEELCHAIR-BOUND MAN BEGGING FOR MONEY IS SHOT
A wheelchair-bound man begging for money at a busy Miami intersection was fatally shot and police were questioning a suspect who led them on a high-speed interstate chase before crashing his car. Miami-Dade police said Tuesday the man in custody matched the description given by shooting witnesses, although no charges were immediately filed. Neither the suspect’s name nor the victim’s were immediately released.
