The conservative House Freedom Caucus condemned Rep. Justin Amash, one of its founding members, on Monday for saying President Trump committed impeachable offenses.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said every member of the caucus in attendance for the group’s weekly meeting opposed Amash’s comments. The group needs 80% of support from its members to take a formal position on a matter.
Amash, R-Mich., was not in attendance.
“It was every single person who totally disagrees with what he says,” Jordan said after the meeting, according to Politico.
Jordan said he asked Amash Saturday, “What are you doing?”
The group did not vote on whether Amash should be pushed out of the Freedom Caucus.
Amash, a libertarian, became the first Republican to back impeachment, saying Saturday that special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report showed Trump “engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment.”
Trump fired back at the Republican, calling him a “loser” and a “lightweight” for his libertarian views that have often put him at odds with his Republican colleagues.
