The 3-minute interview: Paula Decker Currall

Paula Decker Currall is editor of My Day, a new, regional bridal magazine for Washington, Baltimore and Northern Virginia.

How is My Day different than other bridal magazines?

It’s really more of a conceptual kind of magazine, rather than having dishy details or lots of checklists and budgets and spreadsheets. We feel like it’s more of a spa, an escape, where you look through the pages and relax. There are lots of photographs.

Do you offer advice to brides?

Yes, but it’s more about resources than advice. Caterers, florists, stationers, photographers, videographers, wedding planners. A wedding is a lot of work; it takes a lot of planning.

What is the most fun part of your job?

We do some bridal expo events that are really spectacular because we get to showcase what we are about and what we want the magazine to be and talk to brides and really get an idea what they’re looking for. All the vendors come together ? caterers, florists, people like that ? and set up tables or rooms and it?s really sort of an interactive experience for the brides.

What drew you to this position, the writing aspect or your interest in weddings?

Definitely the weddings, because I am not really a writer. I mean, I can do it, but I don’t enjoy it that much. It?s really more about loving weddings and all of the beautiful things that go into them. And all of the planning and details ? I do like that part of it, also.

You got married shortly before taking this job. Now that you are steeped in the latest bridal information, is there anything you would have done differently at your own wedding?

Oh, definitely. Invitation design has really come a long way, even in just the past six months. I really would have taken a lot more time with the invitations and gotten them done more professionally. I decided to do them myself and they were nice, but not as nice as they could have been
