The Missouri legislature passed right-to-work yesterday

Missouri’s state House passed a right-to-work law yesterday, which bans the practice of forcing Missouri workers to pay unions for the privilege of their employment.

The state Senate acted first on the bill, which now goes to Republican Gov. Eric Greitens. He has promised to sign it, making Missouri the 28th right-to-work state.

During the Obama era, as various NLRB rulings increased unions’ power and influence, more and more states adopted right-to-work. That includes Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

Kentucky was the last state to do so while Obama was still president. When Kentucky adopted its right-to-work law last month, a very slight majority of Americans were living under right-to-work laws for the first time since the passage of the National Labor Relations Act in 1935. After Missouri adopts right-to-work, 168 million Americans, or 52 percent of the population, will be living and working under such laws.
