“Many Texas families across our state lost food because of severe weather that ravaged their communities earlier this month,” Abbott said in a press release. “Thanks to the hard work of HHSC, Texans impacted by severe storms and prolonged localized power outages can apply for replacement SNAP benefits so they can have fresh, healthy food to eat.”

Texas was one of several states that faced a tornado outbreak in June, causing widespread property damage and three fatalities. Recipients of food stamps whose food supply was lost or ruined by the storms between June 14 and June 16 have a deadline of July 14 to apply for benefits.

“For families that have been impacted by the recent storms, these replacement food benefits will help provide some peace of mind,” HHSC Chief Program and Services Officer Michelle Alletto said.

Benefits can appear within two days on the Lone Star Card, which is Texas’s electronic benefit transfer card that is used at grocery stores to purchase eligible food items.
