Beyond Fried Chicken: KFC goes plant-based

Kentucky Fried Chicken’s newest menu item may contain no chicken, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t taste like chicken, according to KFC.

Starting Jan. 10, the fast-food giant will offer Beyond Fried Chicken, a plant-based fried chicken alternative, for a limited time, according to a report.

It is the first time a plant-based chicken product will be sold instead of a beef or sausage alternative by a chain the size of KFC, the report noted.

“It’s time,” according to KFC U.S. President Kevin Hochman.

Consumers desire to “eat less animal protein but don’t want to give up comfort food,” he said.

Beyond Fried Chicken is “packed with delicious flavor and the juicy satisfaction that you’d expect from KFC’s iconic fried chicken,” Yum! Brands, the owner of KFC, said.

The alternative is the perfect food for people “that want to eat a little less animal-based protein, but that haven’t become vegan or vegetarian,” according to Hochman.

Beyond Fried Chicken is available as part of a combo meal, or it can be ordered a la carte in six- or 12-piece amounts.

Prices start at $6.99 for six pieces, according to KFC.

“The taste is so good that they might choose it over regular fried chicken,” Hochman said.
