Glenn Greenwald: Snowden ‘hates Facebook,’ ‘Nobody should use Facebook’

Why isn’t Edward Snowden on Facebook?

“He doesn’t use Facebook because he hates Facebook,” Greenwald told an audience in Canada. “They’re one of the worst violators of privacy in history. Nobody should use Facebook.”

Greenwald did, however, say he has encouraged Snowden to have a platform to reach more people, and thinks “There may be one day when he ends up on Twitter.”

“He tends to live his life online,” Greenwald said, “actually, before all this happened, before anyone knew Edward Snowden, it’s what he did anyways.”

Greenwald also mocked the perception that Snowden’s life in Russia, fleeing U.S. prosecution, means he is “condemned to this life of dankness and dark misery.”

Snowden himself recently advised against using Facebook, Dropbox, and Google, calling them “dangerous services” and suggesting alternative services that support encryption.

Laura Poitras‘ new documentary following Snowden and Greenwald in the early days of their exposing NSA spying, “Citizenfour,” is currently in theaters.
