Jonathan Allen, a former White House reporter, used his latest column for CQ-Roll Call to explore the happiness some would experience if Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz were to physically hit Donald Trump.
Denouncing Trump for his “loutish behavior,” Allen wrote that Cruz “must want to punch Trump in the mouth — repeatedly.”
“Few would blame him if he did,” said, who briefly worked for Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in 2010. “Some would cheer.”
Allen’s column comes after the GOP front-runner’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, was charged by Florida police with “simple battery,” a misdemeanor involving a female reporter that he grabbed by the arm. The campaign has said Lewandowski will plead not guilty.
Trump is also repeatedly criticized by journalists and commentators for, they say, sexist comments he has made about other women.
“While they may not want or need anyone to stand up for them, people of good conscience should all stand with them,” Allen wrote, apparently feeling personally threatened by Trump. “If we don’t, Trump will be coming after the rest of us next — targeting us for our gender, our sexual orientation, our skin color, our ancestry, our national origin, our religion, our political ideology or just because he doesn’t like the way we look.”
